In Depth...

Here's a place to find information about the topics we are studying or to look for related topics.

We use a base ten number system. Computers use a binary or base two number system. How does a base two number system work? Sounds like extra credit to me. You might also choose to research the Egyptian number system.

When adding or subtracting fractions, the denominators must be the same. If they are not, find a common denominator. Remember, you can't add things that aren't the same. A common denominator is the least common multiple of two numbers.

When multiplying and dividing fractions, you must first make all numbers into fractions. That means 4 has to be rewritten as 4/1 and 3 1/2 has to be rewritten as 7/2. Also, don't forget, you can't divide by a fraction. Instead you multiply by its reciprocal or inverse. In other words, you can't divide by 3/4, you multiply by 4/3.

The following website offers new problems every two weeks.  Problems may be turned in for credit before the answers are posted on the site. These might be fun to work on with a friend. Remember, part of your grade is for problem solving. Give it a try!
